Shepherd Lake in Ringwood State Park is totally worth the trip. I mean, it's $5! The park is lovely and green and you only have to pay for parking. There's a beautiful picnic area that overlooks the lake with plenty of tables. The beach is small, with limited sand to sit on. But the water is shallow and great for wading.

Long Beach Island is like stepping back in time -- restaurants like Dom's and Harvey Cedar's Shellfish Co. are institutions. Beaches are pristine and lined with sand dunes. Bikers ride the streets barefoot with beach cruisers. Kids line the bay with crab cages. Surfers bob on the horizon and each town is teeming with families of all ages. In short, Long Beach Island makes for an awesome weekend getaway.

Darlington County Park in Mahwah has three lakes and the entrance price is fairly reasonable, particularly if you’re a Bergen County resident. Two of lakes are for swimming (the third is for fishing) and both have sandy beaches, shallow areas for the littlest of water babies and large, deeper patches for serious fun in the water.
