Thanks for the excellent recommendation TT! Went to Melicks last weekend with our 2.5 yr old twin girls who loved every moment of their adventure. From our picnic lunch, to the hayride into the orchard to being able to just walk around and pick apples off the low branches of the dwarf trees...it was a perfect day! They were super excited for mommy to shine their fresh picked apples on her sleeve and couldn't wait to get a bite--don't think I've ever seen them eat so much fruit in one sitting before. We stocked up on delicious Empires and cider. Yum!

We went there in 2010 and it was fabulous! There was a huge playground on the property as well, so there is more to do than just apple-pick. Other (more prepared) families brought picnics and were able to spread out on the grass. Good times ;) !

I am a mom and I would NOT recommend Masker Orchard to anyone. The staff is rude and the manager is a bully, the orchards are a dangerous and chaotic mess full of people THROWING apples and on the way out they demand the right to allow their band of 16 year old employees to physically search EVERY car, even if you didn't go apple picking. They want you to let these kids open your trunk, they take out your car mats and bags and look under every seat. I saw them harass an elderly woman and they made my 3 year old cry. These people are the TSA of apple orchards! We had such a bad experience there that I feel it is my duty to share how terrible it was with everyone I know. So, if you are looking for a nice day picking apples and you don't want to be grossly mistreated, please avoid this place like the plague! I am sure Warwick has other far more hospitable orchards that actually appreciate their customer instead of treating them like criminals!

Hi Paul,
I hope that you had a better experience at Maskers Farms than my family and I did - I'm very disappointed and will never go back there

Warwick County Park has nature trails, a picnic area and play fields. It's on Route 17A in Warwick, located in the Warwick Valley Mountains. You can call 845-986-2031 for more info. In the Warwick village, Stanley Deming Park on South Street and Parkway has a playground. Good luck! Let me know how it goes. -Ronda

Hello! We are planning to go to Masker Orchards this month. Are there any nearby parks that we can picnic at?

A TT subscriber asked me if Shepherd Lake was the kind of spot where you could let a 4-year old wade on his own while mom "supervised" from a drier spot. I say: most definitely. The water's pretty warm and very very shallow. And there are lifeguards on hand. (Not that you should snooze while the kids are a swimmin'.

Excellent. I guess anything's possible in New Jersey, even maple sugaring. I've never seen that type of sap collection container before. Looks like a mod cousin of the old galvanized buckets sometimes still seen in New England. I think most lg producers these days use plastic vacuum tubing that drains down into big barrels.
